Fifty years of jazz

Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra is a unique youth music initiative which combines high-quality music education with all the fun, freedom and creativity of jazz. It is the place for anyone aged between 8 and 24 who plays a musical instrument and wants to play jazz with other young people.

For over 50 years FYJO has supported hundreds of young people, led by founder Richard Michael - an award-winning jazz musician, composer and educator. Our philosophy is simple: “Mistakes are cool!” Jazz is about trying things, and FYJO is a place where it’s safe to experiment, improvise and grow as a musician.

There are no auditions and no formal requirements for new members - enthusiasm is all that is required.

FYJO is a registered Scottish charity (No. SCO 39815), run by a committee of volunteers and supported by our friends and funders.
